Pangdemonium's 2015 Season

Year 6 Theatre student Selma Alkaff has been casted in Pangdemonium's 2015 season. She will be acting as a moody teenager Lauren in a comedy entitled "Circle Mirror Transformation". This achievement was a result of SOTA's Faculty of Theatre working with the theatre company to recommend students for a role.

National Chinese Music Competition 2014

Mathematics Achievements

Several of our Year 1 to 5 students participated in the International Continuous Assessment for Schools (ICAS) on 30 July and the Australian Mathematics Competition (AMC) on 7 August. At the ICAS, our students achieved 3 high distinction awards and 6 high distinction awards, placing our high distinction awardees at the top 1% in Singapore and our distinction awardees among the next top 10%. At the AMC, we had 10 distinction awardees, ranking them among the top 15% of participants worldwide in their respective categories.

8th Singapore National Junior Watercolour Competition

Some of our Visual Arts students participated in the Singapore Watercolour Society’s (SWS) 8th Singapore National Junior Watercolour Competition on 6 September 2014. Winning works were exhibited along with works by professional artists at SWS’ 45th Annual Exhibition at the ARTrium at MICA Building from 6 to 10 September 2014.

New Zealand School of Dance

Two SOTA Dance students will further their training at the New Zealand School of Dance in 2015. Congratulations and best wishes to Jill Goh Su-Jen, who will be a Contemporary Dance major, and Goh Shyan Kai Isaac, a Classical Ballet major.

National Secondary School Chinese Editorial Competition

Two groups of our Year 4 Bilingual students took part in the National Secondary School Chinese Editorial Competition, where one group was awarded the 3rd prize and one group won the commendation prize. Congratulations!

Commonwealth Society of Teachers of Dancing Summer School

Raffles International Music Festival 2014

Music students Thong Wei Ling (Year 4, violin) and Ronan Lim (Year 3, violin) have distinguished themselves at the finals of the Raffles International Music Festival held at the SOTA Concert Hall on 22 August 2014.

Wei Ling was conferred the Excellent Award while Ronan was awarded the Silver Medal in the Youth Division.

Asia Pacific Youth Tchoukball Championships 2014

7 of our Year 3 students went through rigorous selection and represented Singapore in the Asia Pacific Youth Tchoukball Championships 2014 that was held last weekend (22-24 Aug). Six of them competed in the M15 Boys and Girls categories while Muhammad Irsyad participated in the M18 category. All their teams achieved second place.

Singapore Mathematical Olympiad 2014

45 SOTA students participated in the Singapore Mathematical Olympiad 2014 (Junior and Senior Categories) on 3 June this year. Our Junior Team achieved two Bronze Awards and four Honourable Mentions in the competition, while our Senior Team received one Bronze Award.

NOISE Singapore’s The Apprenticeship Programme Exhibition

Works by Visual Arts IBCC students Ryan Benjamin Lee and Nur Aqilah Binte Hassan, Darryl Tan Shaole (Year 5), Lai Yu Tong (Year 6) and alumna Lu Kejia are featured at the NOISE Singapore’s The Apprenticeship Programme Exhibition, running from 16 August to 7 September 2014.

Our teaching faculty members Grace Tan, Robert Zhao, Liao Jiekai and Ng Shi Wen were also involved in this programme.

The Apprenticeship Programme (TAP) is a visual arts mentorship programme organised by NOISE Singapore. This year, 22 established practitioners in the fields of art, design, moving images and photography guided 51 apprentices over a period of four months. The programme culminates in a group exhibition showcasing original works created by the apprentices.

7th National Chinese Short Film Competition

A short film entitled 《友.忆》by a team of Year 3 students bagged 5 of 12 awards at the 7th National Chinese Short Film Competition. The award categories include: Overall Champion (Short Film), Best Director, Best Editing, Most Voted Short Film (based on Facebook voting results) and Best Teacher Facilitator (Ms Belle Tan).

Asian Grand Prix International Ballet Competition

IBCC Dance students, Thang Jian Ying Esen and Jill Goh Su-Jen, have made it to the finals of the Asian Grand Prix International Ballet Competition in Hong Kong. They were conferred the So Danca awards.

Sydney Eisteddfod 2014

Year 3 Music student Zachary Dominguez and Year 5 IBCC Music student Ashley Chua clinched the 2nd prize in the French Song Category and a 3rd Prize in the Italian Song Category respectively at the Sydney Eisteddfod 2014. The Sydney Eistedfodd is an annual competitive performing arts festival that attracts some 30,000 participants.

I Write & Sing My Own Song competition

Music students Lee Hong Xuan's and Huraisha Bte Mohd Rafee’s original composition, “The Home I Love, Singapore" won the First Runner-up and Most Popular Song awards at the Homesongs Songwriting Competition.

President’s Young Performers Concert 2014

Year 5 IBCC Music student Samuel Phua was selected to perform as soloist with the Singapore Symphony Orchestra (SSO) at the President’s Young Performers Concert on 24 and 25 July. He earned the distinction of being the first saxophonist to perform with the SSO on the President’s Young Performers Concert platform.

Nanjing YOG Art Competition 2014

As part of the run-up to the Youth Olympic Games (YOG) held in August 2014 in Nanjing, the YOG organising committee launched an International Youth Drawing Competition in April last year. The theme of the competition was ‘Join the YOG, Embrace the Future’. Over 5,000 entries were submitted and the results of the competition were announced earlier this year. Eight of our Visual Arts students’ entries were recognised for their excellence.

5th Singapore Performer’s Festival

Year 3 Music student Joey Lau and Year 5 IBCC Music student Ng Jia Ning were awarded the Gold Medal at the 5th Singapore Performer’s Festival Gala Concert & Awards Ceremony on Saturday at the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music. The biennial Performer’s Festival gives musicians of all ages a public platform to showcase their talents before a live audience.

National Indian Music Competition

Music students Pavathren S/O Kanagarethinam (Year 4, mridangam) and Surup Sowmithri Thathachar (Year 1, violin) were 1st prize winners in the Intermediate category, and Nishtha Anand (Year 4, veena) was a 3rd prize winner in the Intermediate category.

International Festival of Playwriting and Performance

Year 4 Theatre student Joy Tan attended the International Festival of Playwriting and Performance at the St James Theatre in London in May, as part of her recent win at the ‘Most Promising Playwright’ award at the Trinity College International Playwriting Competition. At the festival, her winning play was read by an excellent cast of honours students from Arts Education Schools London, giving her an opportunity to learn about different creative voices and inflections from those talented students.

6th TDA Dancesport Championships 2014

Year 6 Dance student Lindsey Lum has emerged tops in the 6th TDA Dancesport Championships 2014. She was crowned Champion for Open Category IV – Cha-cha, Samba, Rumba and Jive, beating dancers from the polytechnics and universities. This national dance competition saw 200 over athletes representing 7 tertiary institutions and individual dancers. The competition also featured the Singapore Inter-Tertiary DanceSport Championships.

HomeSongs Songwriting Competition

SOTA students Lim Shi-An, Huraisha Bte Mohd Rafee & Lee Hong Xuan had qualified for the finals of the HomeSongs Songwriting Competition organised by Nexus and Ocean Butterflies Music. Through this competition, songwriting talents are encouraged to reflect deeply on the Singapore identity and their shared experiences and memories, and to express these thoughts through music. Their compositions will be presented at the HomeSongs Finale Showcase at the National Museum on 12 April, 3 - 5pm.

Trinity College International Playwriting Competition

Year 4 Theatre student, Joy Tan, has clinched the 'Most Promising Playwright' award at the Trinity College International Playwriting Competition for The Chessboard Land Of Wonders. The competition aims to encourage new writing for young performers and audiences around the world to engage with – in classrooms, drama clubs, youth theatre groups and more. The winning playwrights in each category are awarded cash prizes of £1,000 and are invited to London to see their play performed as part of Trinity’s International Festival of Playwriting & Performance.

The Straits Times National Youth Media Competition 2013

SOTA emerged as second runner up in The Straits Times National Youth Media Competition 2013. The team comprised of Year 5 students, Monisha Iswaran, Rachel Chew Min Qi, Ysanne Yeo, Rachel Amanda Yin, Clarisse Bu Rui-En and Liu Nuo Lin. The competition required the 10 finalists to produce a news video, write and design the front page of The Straits Times and post online breaking news updates.

Winning Detour

Our recent graduates, Natalie Khoo and Teo Qi Yu, won the Best Documentary and Best Cinematography awards for their film, 'On Such And Such A Day, At Such And Such A Time', at the 5th Singapore Short Film Awards. The ceremony took place at The Substation on 1st March. Natalie expressed surprise at their win as she felt that the other nominees’ works were great as well. A total of 111 films were submitted, of which 70% were from student film makers.

Rendering their way to the top

Two teams from SOTA, Partta Kappa and Dairy Products, have made it into the finals of the N.E.Mation! 8 competition. The Straits Times IN reported on the competition and interviewed the finalists on their submissions. The article highlighted Partta Kappa's video, mentioning that although the video message was not a new one, the presentation of the message was creative and clever. The overall champion will win a fully sponsored trip to a renowned animation studio in the United States in June.

Young composers get a boost

The orchestral work of our Year 6 music student, Koh Cheng Jin was selected for the Singapore Symphony Orchestra (SSO)'s Young Composers Workshop/Concert. Her work "Candle Burns At Both Ends" was performed by SSO at Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music on 13 February 2014.

Jetstar Asia's Art Takes Flight Competition

Year 2 Visual Arts student Janice Yap has emerged as the overall winner of the Jetstar Asia's Lunar New Year Art Takes Flight Boarding Pass Design Competition, an impressive feat over 484 other entries. Janice's design of a family at reunion dinner best captured the essence of Lunar New Year, and will be featured on Jetstar Asia's boarding passes this festive season.

5th Singapore Short Film Awards

A short film by two graduates from SOTA's pioneer film cohort, Nathalie Khoo and Teo Qi Yu, has been nominated for the annual 5th Singapore Short Film Awards. Entitled "On Such and Such A Day, At Such and Such A Time", it is a heart-warming story about the relationship between Natalie and her grandma, Ellen.

The short film is nominated for three categories including Best Documentary, Best Editing (Teo Qi Yu/Natalie Khoo) and Best Cinematography (Teo Qi Yu).

Organised by the Substation, a total of 20 short films were nominated this year.
