Liebeslieder
Featuring Ae Ree Jeong & Friends

It is hard to imagine a time when the only way music could be heard and enjoyed was through live performances, when the chamber salon was the center for domestic music making. But the salon was not just a place for music replication; rather, it was also the site for musical creation. It is from the salon that the art song sprang up as the most intimate form of vocal music. The Lied or art song tradition allowed amateur and professional singers alike to engage their audiences more intimately.
Of the composers featured in this concert, there is a direct lineage that can be traced from Franz Schubert at the beginning of the 19th century to Richard Strauss and Hugo Wolf at the turn of the 20th century. The musical language that Schubert would develop in his Lieder would serve as a model for his successors, Mendelssohn and Schumann and would be passed down through Brahms to Wolf and Strauss. This concert is not just a collection of songs from the 19th century–it represents the historical trajectory of domestic music-making that dominated musical life in the 19th century.
