Leow Geok Hong obtained her Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Chinese Studies from the National University of Singapore and her Diploma in Education from the National Institute of Education. Her extensive experience in the teaching of Chinese Language and Culture has been drawn not only from her academic training, but also from her 5-year stay in China.

Geok Hong has taught at Anglo-Chinese Junior College (ACJC), Convent of the Holy Infant Jesus (CHIJ) Toa Payoh Primary School, Raffles Institution (RI) and Meridian Junior College (MJC). While at RI, she was involved in the planning and implementing of the school’s Integrated Programmes. At MJC, she single-handedly pioneered the “General Studies in Chinese Programme” and helped to set up the “Compass Programme”, which encompassed lesson plans and activities for students’ character education. The latter won her The Outstanding Contribution Award in 2006. She was again awarded The Outstanding Contribution Award for her work on The Culture Talk 2007 Organising Committee in finding new and innovative ways to promote the learning and use of the Chinese Language in all secondary schools in Singapore.

As a member of the Sub-Committee of the Chinese Language Review Committee chaired by former President Ong Teng Cheong, Geok Hong was involved in assessing and improving the Chinese Language curriculum.

She was invited by the Ministry of Education to share on how to innovatively teach Chinese words that depict colour and sounds in a metaphoric way to all junior college teachers at the seminar “Innovative Approaches to the Teaching of Chinese in Secondary School and Junior College”.

Geok Hong was a member of the Editorial Board of “华文老师”, a magazine for all Chinese teachers in Singapore. Her duties included writing and editing articles and organising sharing sessions among Chinese teachers.
