Government conducted Stage 1 Open Tender, inviting ideas for an arts school in an urban setting.

April 2005
A total of 29 tender entries were received for Stage 1 Open Tender. Entries were evaluated anonymously on strength of architectural ideas.

May 2005
5 entries were selected to develop their ideas further by the Steering Committee’s selection panel. Shortlisted firms were presented the design brief for Stage 2 of the Tender.

July 2005
Submission of 5 shortlisted architectural design proposals for Stage 2 Tender. Presentations were made by the shortlisted firms and evaluated by the Steering Committee's selection panel.

August 2005
Selection Panel submitted Evaluation Report, selecting WOHA for consideration by the Government. The Panel's selection of the architectural design proposal by WOHA was based on concept, originality, buildability, flexibility, contextual relationship and technical competence.

Focus group dialogues with local academic and arts community on design requirements for an arts school.

The selection of the architectural design came about from months of planning and pre-development work by the Ministry of Information, Communications and the Arts and the National Arts Council.

September 2005
Selected architectural design incorporated design changes based on feedback from focus group dialogues, submitted for consideration by Government.

November 2005
Launch of Designing the Singapore Arts School exhibition.

January 2006
Groundbreaking of the School of the Arts by Dr Lee Boon Yang, Minister for Information, Communications and the Arts.
