Remaking Singapore Report recommends starting a national secondary school for the arts and music to enable early identification and nurturing of talents.
August 2003
Ministry of Information, Communication and the Arts (MICA) appointed a Committee on Specialised Arts School to study demand for its feasibility.
November 2003
Consultation with arts groups, local and international schools and the public.
March 2004
Committee on Specialised Arts School submitted its report to MICA, and Government accepted its recommendation to set-up a pre-tertiary independent arts school.

April 2004
MICA formed a Steering Committee to oversee the implementation.
March 2005
Dr Lee Boon Yang, Minister for Information, Communications and the Arts, announced selection of site at Kirk Terrace, flanked by Cathay Building and Paradiz Centre in the city. (He also announced the appointment of Principal-Designate Rebecca Chew for the arts school.
August 2005
Focus group dialogues with local academic and arts community on design requirements for an arts school.
November 2005
Launch of Designing the Singapore Arts School exhibition.
January 2006
Groundbreaking of The School of the Arts by Dr Lee Boon Yang.
