Rick Smith is a guitarist, educator and composer with over 40 years of professional experience. He has been based in Singapore for over 25 years, contributing to the local Arts and Music scene as a teacher and performer. During this time, he directed the NUS Jazz Band for more than 10 years and served as the bandleader/ guitarist at the legendary jazz venue “Harry’s Bar at Boat Quay” for 17 years.
He is fluent in Mandarin and has arranged performed and composed for Chinese Artistes such as Cai Qin and Harlem Yu, as well as acting in local Mandarin TV programming. In 2006, his composition “Something’s Wrong” was in the top 10 for MTV Indonesia’s Newcomer of the Year award and his 2007 release “Liminal Man” garnered international critical acclaim. He holds a BA in music composition and an MA in Arts Practice and Pedagogy. Recent projects include his original group: Promise-Jazz on Strings and the Lower Delta String Band, based on American Roots music.
Currently he is teaching music at the French school of Singapore (LFS), LASALLE School of the Arts, SOTA, and UWSEA at Dover. In addition, he performs regularly at Venues around Singapore including the Intercontinental Hotel Bugis.
