ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF HEAD OF DEPARTMENT (MUSIC)

Head of Department (Music) leads a faculty towards achieving the School’s strategic objectives, developing curriculum and resources, coordinating learning experiences through which SOTA connects to the larger community. As a member of the School’s teaching fraternity, the Job Holder is to shape the cultivation of students' learning dispositions in order to prepare them to meet the challenges of the 21st century

The Job Holder is expected to promote civic and artistic engagement by providing opportunities for artistic and leadership development to students and staff. The Job Holder will also work closely with SOTA Corporate Office to develop funding for programmes, and strategic partnerships with the arts sector.

The roles and responsibilities of a Head of Department (Music) are:

Educational Leader 

  • Leads in the design, implementation and review of the curriculum, pedagogy and assessment practices 

  • Demonstrates and continues to develop strong educational and artistic practices 

  • Creates and models a vibrant classroom environment that is conducive to learning, 

  • Adopts an inquiry approach to pedagogical improvements modelling for self and others a high expectation in teaching and learning.

  • Monitors and evaluates student learning regularly by providing timely and constructive feedback.

Change Leader

  • Leads change in the faculty so that the curriculum and programme remain relevant and responsive to changes in the wider environment

  • Demonstrates knowledge of factors which contribute to effectiveness in teaching and learning, makes appropriate adjustments in the curriculum in line with the school’s strategic thrusts

  • Keeps up-to-date with developments in the arts industry 

  • Coaches and mentors staff in their professional development to strengthen and deepen capabilities both in teaching and artistic domains

  • Manages the department and makes sound decisions on professional and administrative matters. 

  • Plans and stewards resources provided for the department to accomplish its work-plan

  • Upholds and enforces school policy, administrative procedures, and school rules and regulations, and is supportive of them. 

Culture Architect 

  • Believes in building a faculty culture that is learning-focussed, respectful, generative and purposeful

  • Partners other Heads of Department and School Leadership to contextualise and identify faculty-relevant strategies to build a culture of learning

  • Builds communities of learners within the faculty/team and among students

  • Grows and sustains partnerships with stakeholders to strengthen the curriculum and programme 

  • Endeavours to be a positive ambassador of the school and acts in its interests
