Congratulations to Year 4 students Shobitha Senthil Nathan, Trina Alessandra Vaz, Dhareshwar Sanchita Ashwin and Lam Jey Min for placing SOTA as one of the Top 5 schools in the Creative Component of the NUS Geography Challenge 2020! Three students also achieved the Silver medal in the individual component.
The theme of the Creative Component this year was “Operation Climate Change: Time for
Action”. For this component, students were required to adopt sustainable practices in a specific
area (food, clothing, single use plastic etc.) for a week and document the whole process in a
poster, with the aim of highlighting how individuals can play a part in combating climate change
through sustainable lifestyles. Our students chose to identify sustainable
practices in their choice of food, ranging from choosing local produce to reduce their carbon
footprint, to choosing crops which are less "thirsty" to reduce the amount of embedded water
needed to grow them.
"The whole experience was enriching and rewarding," said Shobitha. "The preparation for the test allowed me to learn beyond the syllabus and gave me exposure to new geographical insights. This has
deepened my understanding and passion for the learning of Geography."
Special thanks to Mrs Merlin Tan and Ms Wang Yizhen for their guidance throughout the Challenge!
