2022 was a fruitful year for our students and the school as we celebrate the participation and achievement of our students.

2021 IB Results Release

The SOTA Class of 2021 braved through a challenging year and achieved a 100% pass rate in the International Baccalaureate (IB) examinations! A huge thank you to our teachers and parents too, whose incredible love and support helped make this possible. 

Congratulations to our graduates! As you enter the next chapter of your learning journey, we hope you strive to harness your creativity and passion for the arts and become positive changemakers in the community!

D:2 Dance Competition

In January, Year 5 Dance students Low Su Jing and Sheryl Chew participated in the finals of the D:2 Dance Competition. The competition encourages young aspiring dancers to unleash their creativity by fusing traditional Singapore dance culture with other genres. Combining Chinese and contemporary dance, Su Jing and Sheryl’s performance clinched them the consolation award in Category A.

13-19 Art Prize

Year 6 Visual Arts student Huang Luxiang Andrew clinched the Silver award at the inaugural 13-19 Art Prize, a nationwide competition that recognises and celebrates young art talents in Singapore. 

His mixed media-on-canvas work titled Focus is inspired by the visual qualities of Singapore’s HDB flats, such as their closely stacked living spaces and crowded neighbourhoods. Andrew’s work and the rest of the winning art pieces were put up for auction, with proceeds going to The Business Times Budding Artists Fund.

Year 4 students in NUS Geography Challenge 2022

Congratulations to Year 4 students Olivia Chua Ning, Kimaya Devang Bhuta, Andrei David Rasmussen, and Durva Gautam Kamdar for reaching the semi-finals of the NUS Geography Challenge 2022! The challenge sought to empower students to envision their eco-utopia and create the blueprints for a green future. Durva also achieved the Gold award in the individual component and was invited to the Geography Talent Development Programme, an enrichment programme that nurtures students’ passion for Geography and enhances their knowledge in the subject.

Well done students, and special thanks to their teachers for their guidance throughout the challenge!

Lee Kuan Yew Water Prize

Since 2010, SOTA’s Music students have been invited to perform at the biennial Lee Kuan Yew Water Prize. In April 2022, SOTA’s Wind Ensemble and Percussion students opened the event with Naoya Wada’s “Flower Crown”, a piece reminiscing the Japanese tradition of making ornamental hairpins. 

The performance was conducted by Mr Lee Jin Jun from the Music faculty. IBCP students Joshua Lau (Year 6) and Regan Ho (Year 5) also starred in the highlight performance, playing two short works based on the Malay folk tunes “Ikan Kekek” and “Suriram”.

8th Félix Godefroid Harp Competition 2022

In the same month, Music students Renee Yadav (Year 4) and Kaitlyn Tan (Year 2) took part in the 8th Félix Godefroid Harp Competition. Both of them clinched the first prize in the Excellence Category and Jeunes Talent Category respectively. Held in Belgium, the competition unites and celebrates talented harpists from all around the world. SOTA is proud to see our students participate in such unique opportunities and gain valuable experience in their journey as aspiring artists.

2021 “Feed My Trashemon” School Competition

Visual Arts students Liew Li Yu Jade (Year 2) and Justin Teo (Year 3) participated in the  2021 “Feed My Trashemon” School Competition and were placed among the top 10 finalists of the competition. They attended the award ceremony in April and received their awards from Guest of Honour Ms Grace Fu, Minister for Sustainability and the Environment. The bins designed by them were also placed around SOTA campus. 

Organised by the Public Hygiene Council in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, the competition invited students to showcase their creativity and design monster bins, or “Trashemons”, that promote cleaner habits among Singaporeans. The designs aim to encourage members of the community to “feed” the bins and dispose of their litter appropriately. 

A big congratulations once again to our students!

14th Inter School Tchoukball Championships

In May, our ‘B’ Division Tchoukball boys’ teams made SOTA history by clinching 1st place in the Cup category and 2nd runner-up in the Plate category, while the girls’ teams clinched 1st runner-up in the Cup category and 2nd runner-up in the Bowl category. 

Following the ‘B’ division teams’ success, our ‘A’ Division boys’ and girls’ teams finished champions in both the Cup and Plate categories. An outstanding achievement — well done and congratulations to all the players!

International Ballet Grand Prix Singapore

Year 3 Dance students Kristen Sara Wong and Sophie Ter participated in the International Ballet Grand Prix Singapore 2022. Both students qualified for the finals held in June 2022 at the University Cultural Centre Theatre and Sophie eventually placed 5th in the Youth 2 Category. Bravo dancers, and thank you to Mr Ng Teck Voon and Ms Cheah Mei Sing for mentoring the students and guiding them throughout their preparation!

Singapore Youth Festival (SYF) 2022 Art Exhibition

Artworks by our Visual Arts students and alumni were selected for the onsite SYF 2022 Art Exhibition in July. The theme for 2022 — ‘Artist and Sustainability’ — invites young artists to examine how we may inspire social, cultural, and environmental change and make a positive impact on the world. Well done to students Nikki Lim, Sheryln Chow, Eunice Lim, Loh Min En, Hang Jia Wei, and Kate Chang, and alumni Andrea Cheah and Dayna Indry Lawadinata for participating in this meaningful event!

Poetry Festival Singapore

In July, SOTA students swept the top three awards in the National Poetry Competition Junior Category organised by Poetry Festival Singapore. Nyein Su Thar (Literary Arts, Year 3) and Durva Gautam Kamdar (Literary Arts, Year 4) were awarded the first and second place respectively, while Tham Yu Xuan (Film, Year 5) was awarded third place for his poem.

In another event by Poetry Festival Singapore, Film student Claudia Chen (Year 6) was chosen as a finalist in the open call for poems related to the theme of catharsis. She performed her poem at LASALLE College of the Arts on 30 July 2022.

SOTA Music Award (Orchestral Instrumentalist)

In August, Eda Chua and Timothy Cher (Music, Class of 2021) were announced as the recipients of the inaugural SOTA Music Award (Orchestral Instrumentalist). The SOTA Music Award is made possible by the Goh Soon Tioe Centenary Fund, and serves to recognise and provide encouragement to deserving IBCP Music students. 

Ms Vivien Goh, daughter of the late Mr Goh Soon Tioe, met with our Music students to share about Mr Goh’s inspiring journey as he pursued his passion towards music despite the odds to become one of Singapore’s local pioneers in Western music.
