A recipient of the Goh Chok Tong Youth Promise Award, Mohd Fared Jainal engages in cross-disciplinary work that delves into the realms of both visual and performing arts. He graduated with a Master of Arts (Design) from Open University/LASALLE College of the Arts.
Fared has collaborated extensively with various theatre and art groups in Singapore as a director, performer, visual artist and set designer. Pop Station, his collaboration with local art collective KYTV has travelled to Germany, Thailand, and Indonesia. His works have taken him to Darwin, Fukuoka, Seoul, Shanghai, Shenzhen, Hong Kong, Brunei and Kuala Lumpur. The Gingerbread Man (Singapore Repertory Theatre), in collaboration with LASALLE College of the Arts, earned him Best Set Design for 2007 Life! Theatre Awards.
Fared performed and designed the set for the play Temple, by Cake Theatrical Productions, which was co-commissioned by Singapore Arts Festival 2008 and Napoli Theatro Festival 2008 in Naples, Italy. His work The Comedy of the Tragic Goats by Cake Theatre won him Best Director for 2009 Life! Theatre Awards, and Cuckoo Birds, collaboration between Cake Theatre and Five Arts Centre, Malaysia, won him Best Set Design for 8th BOH Cameronian Arts Awards 2009. In 2010, he was one of the four artists selected for residency with the prestigious La Mama International in Spoleto, Umbria, Italy.
Fared is also the founding member of Neon Tights, a visual art collective dealing with both two- and three-dimensional design works that promotes and encourages interactivity. The aim is to excite and exhaust materials and objects to form playable and stimulating structures in varying environments.
Fared has taught Contemporary and Contextual Studies, Digital Media, Spatial Design, Fundamental & Developmental Drawings, Set and Costume Design, Production Design and Directing & Performance in institutions such as LASALLE College of the Arts, National Institute of Education and Republic Polytechnic.
