Makoto Kawaguchi was born in Tokyo but is a proud Singapore citizen. An MOE Education Merit Scholar, Makoto holds a Bachelor of Arts (First-Class Honours) in English and Related Literature from the University of York and a Master of Arts (Distinction) in Comparative Literature from King’s College London.
Prior to joining SOTA, Makoto was Head of Department of English Language & Literature at Queensway Secondary School. There, he sought to align department and classroom practices to Ron Ritchhart’s Cultures of Thinking, aiming to create more meaningful and authentic learning experiences. He is excited to journey alongside the next generation of creative thinkers here at SOTA.
Makoto loves both so-called ‘high’ and ‘low’ art, and derives equal joy from viewing exhibitions at the National Gallery as he is in the audience at local professional wrestling events. He is a lifelong fan of Celtic Football Club and hopes they will one day win the Champions’ League.
