Hu Qiren is a visual artist, educator and administrator, whose practice investigates the myriad forms of imaging making, incorporating a wide range of media, including photography, video, installation and performance. After completing his studies in photography and digital imaging at the Nanyang Technological University School of Art, Design and Media in 2012, Qiren obtained a scholarship the following year to further his education in fine arts at The New School, Parsons. During his time in New York, he apprenticed under the tutelage of renowned artist Hiroshi Sugimoto for more than 5 years before returning to Singapore.
As a practicing artist and educator, Qiren cares deeply about the value of education in the visual arts. His teaching philosophy is anchored by a personal goal to foster an environment where his students can approach projects with the necessary technical skills married with conceptual rigour. Through studio practice, critical discussion, lectures and professional development, he imbue in his students the ability to articulate their ideas and concepts through writing and production, and develop their unique visual language and add their voice to the ongoing dialogues of contemporary art making.
