Loo Geok Tuan obtained her Bachelor of Arts (Honours) degree in Chinese Studies from the National University of Singapore and her Diploma in Education from the National Institute of Education (NIE), Singapore. She taught at Raffles Girls’ School (Secondary) for 16 years and is a trained Gifted Education Programme teacher since 1995. She has also undergone International Baccalaureate’s specialised training in teaching Chinese and in guiding students for their Creativity, Activity, Service projects.

In 2003, Geok Tuan's lesson on the teaching of the origin of Chinese characters based on Understanding by Design (UBD) principles won her a Merit Award in the National Creative Teaching Strategy Competition. In 2004, she co-presented a paper at the Gifted Education Conference titled “Planning of Chinese Curriculum Applying Understanding by Design and the Sharing of Teaching Experience in IP School”.

Geok Tuan believes that reading and writing are not mere means to enhance language competency, but also powerful channels to communicate and connect with students as they think critically about the issues raised in what they are reading and writing. Geok Tuan is passionate about teaching, as she believes that every child has the potential to be the best he or she can be
