Assistant Manager, Science Laboratory

The Assistant Manager (Science Laboratory) will assist to lead the science laboratory staff (technicians and attendants) in managing the facilities and inventory to support the teaching and learning of science. The incumbent will also be involved in the smooth running of the laboratories for the delivery of science lessons and practical assessments.


Job responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:


Management of processes

  • Supervise the laboratory staff in their daily operations;
  • Prepare the daily work schedules for laboratory staff;
  • Monitor and provide regular feedback to laboratory staff on work outcomes;
  • Design and implement a framework for laboratory operations and maintenance of equipment;
  • Design and implement a professional development roadmap for laboratory staff;
  • Manage the flow of information between the science laboratory, science faculty and other corporate offices;
  • Prepare budget proposals and monitor the overall expenditure of the science laboratory materials account;
  • Oversee the workflow management for the acquisition, procurement and follow-up actions related to laboratory equipment and purchase of materials;
  • Monitor the utilisation, functionality and effectiveness of laboratory equipment and materials, carry out routine maintenance and initiate overhauls, enhancements and improvements;
  • Oversee the inspection of gas and water systems and carry out minor repairs and preventive measures;
  • Oversee the thorough cleaning of the drainage systems and equipment by laboratory attendants;
  • Oversee the setting up, dismantling and cleaning of equipment;
  • Oversee science laboratory-related work processes such as photography, simple electrical wiring, use of cement, waxes and adhesives, and supervision of students’ practical work;
  • Coordinate with other corporate offices and teaching faculties on the deployment of laboratory staff for the planning and execution of administrative processes as required by the school;
  • Manage the risk assessment processes for the use of laboratory equipment, and the preparation, transportation and use of hazardous materials.

Management of customers

  • Coordinate with external agencies, suppliers and vendors to maintain a diverse network that will facilitate the prompt delivery of a wide variety of science laboratory equipment and materials at the most competitive price;
  • Oversee the updating of the science faculty on the acquisition of new equipment and materials, and work with the faculty on the requisition, issue and return of equipment and materials;
  • Oversee the logistical aspects for the use of the science laboratories as a facility for science education and research projects, e.g. booking of the laboratories and equipment for use during and after curriculum time;
  • Supervise students in the data collection phase of their research projects;
  • Conduct demonstrations and training for laboratory staff, teachers and students on the use of selected laboratory equipment;
  • Provide recommendations to teachers and students on the logistical and preparatory aspects of laboratory activities, so as to allow such activities to be carried out successfully.

Management of resources

  • Oversee the management of the science laboratory inventory, ensuring a ready supply of standard glassware, chemicals and other perishable items, to support the teaching and learning of science;
  • Oversee the maintenance of aquaria, vivaria, animal and plant experiments, livestock, and biological garden, if any;
  • Oversee the unpacking, checking and storage of new equipment and materials;
  • Oversee the manipulation and maintenance of teaching aids used by the science faculty;
  • Oversee checking and replenishment of items in the first aid boxes;
  • Oversee the treatment of bench tops and painting of fittings and equipment.

Job Requirements

  • Minimum Diploma or Degree in any field
  • Relevant experience (At least 5 years in supervisory role) in science laboratory management, facilities operations, or technical support, preferably in a school, education, or public-sector environment
  • Demonstrated ability to supervise and guide technical or support staff
  • Good knowledge of laboratory operations, safety procedures, and risk management, including handling of equipment and hazardous materials
  • Strong organisational, planning, and coordination skills, with the ability to manage multiple work processes
  • Able to work effectively with teachers, students and laboratory staff
  • Good written and verbal communication skills
  • Meticulous, responsible, and able to work independently as well as collaboratively in a team
