The Theatre Career-related Studies (CRS) comprises four interconnected modules:

Acting and Performance

This module immerses students in actor training by revisiting their prior acting knowledge to open them to new possibilities and prepare them for conservatory training after SOTA. They will spend time on core skills training in voice, movement, and imagination, and go through the fundamentals of scene work, monologues and improvisation. Students will also explore diverse acting methodologies and stage performances of various acting systems and theatrical styles.

Community and Industry

This module explores the realities of professional theatre to help students understand the industry’s structure and how artists engage with local communities. This module will demystify the inner workings of professional theatre and prepare students to enter the industry. Students will examine practical applications of theatre-making — how artists navigate and thrive within the local industry — and undertake small-scale educational or community projects to build skills in applied or educational theatre, such as theatre education workshops, excerpts of forum theatre, and small verbatim performances.

Form and Creation

This module blends theory and creative practice to explore theatre creation from the perspectives of a playwright, director, and actor-collaborator. Adopting an elemental, exploratory, and experiential approach, teachers will guide students through close examinations of dramatic texts and writings to understand elements and principles by conducting readings and discussions paired with practical studio exploration. The module will focus on new plays and ideas, thereby allowing students to form a greater appreciation of form, style, and genre.

Rehearsal and Production

This module offers students an immersive professional experience — students are integrated into a dynamic theatre company setting, gaining first-hand experience in professional rehearsals and productions as they apply their skills from the Acting and Performance classes in a comprehensive, full-scale theatrical production. Students will receive guidance and mentorship from their teacher, who functions as their director, through the rehearsal process as they work with well-known scripted plays and devise original works to foster their growth in textual understanding, character development, and performance style. They will learn how to navigate within the director’s vision and develop sensitivity to audience reception and engagement.
