Karen graduated from the National University of Singapore with a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) degree in Chinese Studies, and thereafter obtained her Post-Graduate Diploma in Education at the National Institute of Education (NIE), Singapore. She went on to obtain the Master of Arts (by research) double degree from NUS and Peking University and was awarded the Lee Foundation Gold Medal for her research. She has also undergone International Baccalaureate’s specialised training in teaching Chinese and in guiding students for their Extended Essays.
Prior to joining SOTA, Karen taught both lower and upper secondary Chinese for 10 years at three mainstream schools. As the pioneer team in Greendale Secondary School, she set up the Chinese unit in her department. She also started the Chinese Orchestra as a co-curricular activity in the school. At Unity Secondary School, Karen took on the role of level coordinator in her department as well as coordinator of the Values-in-Action committee.
Karen has cultivated a deep passion for music and drama since her secondary school days in Hong Kong. She was an active Choir and Chorale member in Good Hope School (Hong Kong) and has participated in the Hong Kong Music and Speech Festivals annually before her family moved to Singapore. In Junior College, she was a member of the Chinese Cultural Society and directed a musical play for the school's annual production. She hopes that her keen interest in the arts and teaching experience can help SOTA students appreciate the Chinese language and find joy in learning it.
