The SOTA Primary 6 Art Competition 2023 is underway! To inspire young aspiring artists, in this #DiscoverSotaVA series we catch up with our Visual Arts students to discover more on their artmaking process and what drives their passion for Visual Arts. Here we speak with Year 2 student Leung Ler Tong!

Hello Ler Tong! Your submission, Planet 23, was a top 50 finalist for the SOTA Primary 6 Art Competition in 2020. What motivated you to participate, and what was your inspiration behind the artwork?
Based on the theme "The World & I", Planet 23 depicts the things that Ler Tong loves and finds meaningful in the shape of a globe
Hello! The P6 Art Competition was something that I really looked forward to back in primary school. I wanted to challenge myself by creating a large scale, A3 sized artwork and dive deeper into the art making process.

The title, Planet 23, was actually inspired by my register number back in primary school. I had an attachment to my number as it had stuck with me for a few years. I was also inspired by doodle artists like Visoth Kakvei and Lei Melendres, and artworks done with a drawing pen that could produce amazing effects. With Planet 23, I wanted to create a piece that was not only very detailed, but also had significance and variety.

I was initially anxious about participating in the competition as I wasn't sure what the judges were expecting. However, as I got to practise along the way and work on my final submission, I eased up and enjoyed the process of drawing and creating the artwork. I would say my fondest memory was when I was drawing the "barriers" surrounding the planet. It was extremely satisfying to see everything come together in the end and I felt a strong sense of accomplishment.
What sparked your interest in Visual Arts, and what do you love about it?

My interest in Visual Arts started at a young age, maybe around age 5 to 6. I was drawn to creating art and it just felt right to me. I enjoyed doodling and making my own characters with their own individual stories - it was a great way to pass time and I had fun while I did it. It was only at the age of 12 that I started to consider how much Visual Arts meant to me, and that motivated me to continue pursuing it at SOTA!

What I love about Visual Arts is that I can create almost anything I want. There are so many mediums and materials to choose from - the possibilities are endless! I find it simply amazing that each person has their own unique method, styles, and inspirations. Personally, my works are mostly to do with everyday life and my own emotions. Besides that, I am also deeply inspired by TV shows and comics! I especially enjoy reading comics, and I would frequently look back to my favourite scenes and try to "recreate" what makes the scene special.

Lastly, I love that art can be used as a form of personal expression, an avenue to express our emotions and feelings instead of bottling them up. Creating art is a process, a journey, and an adventure. To me, it's like letting your mind go free and just moving your hands, and whatever the end product is, it'll be great!
You've just completed your second year as a Visual Arts student! What are Visual Arts lessons like in SOTA?

Visual Arts lessons are interactive and fun! There are many different classes such as Drawing and Painting, Theory and History of Art, Visual Journaling, and Sculpture/Ceramics. Being exposed to such a wide variety of artmaking techniques has allowed me to explore and experiment with new mediums, and gave me the opportunity to push my boundaries as an artist.

Over the last two years, I've met and made new friends who share the same passion for Visual Arts. Overall, it's been a really fun and enriching experience, and I always look forward to attending my Visual Art lessons!
Say hi to our young budding artists! Do you have any advice for this year's participants?
Have fun while creating your artwork! Enjoy yourself and don't feel too stressed about coming up with ideas. The process won't always be smooth, and that's normal. If you face a mental block, try to take a break and do something else. Alternatively, you can seek inspiration from other artists and the world around you!

Finally, do take your time and try not to rush the process! In the end, it's all about enjoying your artmaking and making the most out of it.

The SOTA Primary 6 Art Competition 2023 is open from 25 October 2022 to 27 January 2023. If you will be in Primary 6 in 2023 (based in Singapore), we invite you to participate in this drawing and painting competition and submit your artwork via your Primary School!
