On 3 August 2017, SOTA’s Music Faculty collaborated with the Singapore Chinese Orchestra (SCO) for a joint concert at SOTA Concert Hall as part of the SCO’s Campus Rhapsody series, in which SCO actively promotes traditional Chinese music in schools.

The SCO is Singapore’s only professional national Chinese orchestra and is made up of more than 80 musicians. Well known for its high-performance standards and versatility, collaborating with the SCO offered our students a unique and valuable experience to be able to play alongside a professional and established orchestra and conductor, Quek Ling Kiong - a seasoned professional conductor that has conducted symphony orchestras all over the world.

This year’s concert featured a variety of repertoire to the theme of Chinese Classical and Folk Music. There were a total of 7 pieces played, and one of the pieces was a composition by SOTA Year 6 student Low Likie entitled Obscurity. Other than Likie, Chinese instrument students Wong Qi Qing Lisa Maria (Year 4) and Ng Tian Ngah Athena (Year 1), together with SOTA’s Percussion ensemble and some of our Music alumni, were also part of the performance. It was truly a valuable opportunity for our students where they learnt more about SCO, preserving traditional arts and culture through music, and caught a glimpse of what it takes to become a professional musician.
