Visual Arts Students Won Faber-Castell Art Competition

SOTA Visual Arts students Jedrek Koh and Ryan Benjamin Lee (Year 3) won 1st and 3rd prize respectively in the Faber-Castell Art Competition. 

Based on the theme "Live Creativity", the competitors were hailed from local schools as well as international schools such as Indonesia art institutions. The prize ceremony was held at the Ion Art Gallery on 22 December 2012.

President's Challenge Social Enterprises Award 2012

SOTA's Year 3 Visual Arts student, Audrey Lee, did the school proud when her design was selected and commissioned to be produced into trophies for the President's Challenge Social Enterprises Award 2012 (PCSEA). The award ceremony took place at the Istana on 6 December 2012.

Inspired by pearls, Audrey's design represents different people from various communities. From the base to the top of the trophy, every single pearl plays an essential role to show how various people of our society come together to help and complement each other.

Launched in March 2012, the PCSEA is the only award within the social enterprise sector in Singapore that aims to recognise outstanding social enterprises for their contributions made to the social services sector.

2012 National Chinese Music Competition

SOTA's Chinese instrumentalist, Koh Cheng Jin, 16, has been awarded the first prize (Yangqin, Youth category) in the 2012 National Chinese Music Competition. In addition, the SOTA Chinese Percussion Ensemble also won the first prize in the Ensemble category. The winners will perform with the Singapore Chinese Orchestra during the Prize Winners' Concert at the Singapore Conference Hall on Sunday, 9 December 2012.

The biennial National Chinese Music Competition was first organised in 1998 by the National Arts Council and serves as a platform for music excellence. It aims to develop the performing skills of musicians in Singapore; to improve musical standards; and to identify potential music talents. It also provides opportunities for young musicians to perform in a competitive situation before an international jury. Contestants compete in the Dizi, Erhu, Guzheng, Pipa, Sheng, Suona, Yangqin, Zhongruan and Ensemble categories.

The Flight of the Jade Bird

SOTA's Year 4 music student Almira Farid was given the honour to perform in Hong Kong from 8 - 10 November 2012 at an international arts festival in a Singaporean musical production "The Flight of the Jade Bird". Written by renowned Singapore composer Mark Chan, this stage production saw Almira singing the role of boy treble and performing alongside leading Asian opera singers and musicians.

25th Annual Lions International Peace Poster Contest

SOTA's Year 1 student Nadhirah Binte Shapudin has emerged tops for the 25th Annual Lions International Peace Poster Contest for the Singapore district. Her poster was selected for its originality, artistic merit and effective portrayal of the contest theme "Imagine Peace" and was among the 24 winning entries selected from more than 375,000 entries submitted worldwide. She will compete with the other international finalists in November 2012, where the grand prize winner will get an opportunity to attend the awards ceremony on Lions Day with the United Nations in March 2013.

Porsche SC Global Carrera Cup Asia Design Challenge

Year 4 SOTA student Lim Ping Qi emerged as overall winner in the Porsche SC Global Carrera Cup Asia Design Challenge. Her winning car design was unveiled during a media event on 14 September 2012 at the MBS Convention Centre, where she was also presented with a miniature version of her car. Ping Qi's design will also be on display on a real GT3 cup car at MBS from 14 - 23 September 2012.

Commonwealth Society Teacher's of Dancing 14th Singapore Dance Competition

Two SOTA students did the school proud in the recent Commonwealth Society Teacher's of Dancing 14th Singapore Dance Competition which took place on 1 & 2 September 2012.

Prizes Won:

Character/Demi Character Solo Open - 2nd place: Clancy Ryan
Contemporary Solo Open - 1st place: Ivan Koh

SOTA students design sculpture for IRAS

The Inland Revenue Authority of Singapore (IRAS) has commissioned the design and production of a sculpture to SOTA to mark its 20th anniversary. Year 4 student Rebecca Lee's design was selected and fabricated into a sculpture to emulate the progress and improvements that IRAS has undergone throughout the past 20 years. Singapore's President Dr Tony Tan graced the anniversary celebrations on 31 August 2012 and unveiled the sculpture conceptualised by Rebecca and her four teammates.

Drama Box presents "Project Mending Sky: US" featuring SOTA Theatre students

SOTA Theatre students get a rare opportunity to take part in the exciting theatre project coming up in August/September 2012 by one of Singapore's foremost Theatre companies, DramaBox.
