HomeSongs Songwriting Competition 

SOTA students Lim Shi-An, Huraisha Bte Mohd Rafee & Lee Hong Xuan had qualified for the finals of the HomeSongs Songwriting Competition organised by Nexus and Ocean Butterflies Music. Through this competition, songwriting talents are encouraged to reflect deeply on the Singapore identity and their shared experiences and memories, and to express these thoughts through music. Their compositions will be presented at the HomeSongs Finale Showcase at the National Museum on 12 April, 3 - 5pm.

Trinity College International Playwriting Competition 

Year 4 Theatre student, Joy Tan, has clinched the 'Most Promising Playwright' award at the Trinity College International Playwriting Competition for The Chessboard Land Of Wonders. The competition aims to encourage new writing for young performers and audiences around the world to engage with – in classrooms, drama clubs, youth theatre groups and more. The winning playwrights in each category are awarded cash prizes of £1,000 and are invited to London to see their play performed as part of Trinity’s International Festival of Playwriting & Performance.

The Straits Times National Youth Media Competition 2013 

SOTA emerged as second runner up in The Straits Times National Youth Media Competition 2013. The team comprised of Year 5 students, Monisha Iswaran, Rachel Chew Min Qi, Ysanne Yeo, Rachel Amanda Yin, Clarisse Bu Rui-En and Liu Nuo Lin. The competition required the 10 finalists to produce a news video, write and design the front page of The Straits Times and post online breaking news updates.

Rendering their way to the top 

Two teams from SOTA, Partta Kappa and Dairy Products, have made it into the finals of the N.E.Mation! 8 competition. The Straits Times IN reported on the competition and interviewed the finalists on their submissions. The article highlighted Partta Kappa's video, mentioning that although the video message was not a new one, the presentation of the message was creative and clever. The overall champion will win a fully sponsored trip to a renowned animation studio in the United States in June.

Young composers get a boost

The orchestral work of our Year 6 music student, Koh Cheng Jin was selected for the Singapore Symphony Orchestra (SSO)'s Young Composers Workshop/Concert. Her work "Candle Burns At Both Ends" was performed by SSO at Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music on 13 February 2014.

Jetstar Asia's Art Takes Flight Competition 

Year 2 Visual Arts student Janice Yap has emerged as the overall winner of the Jetstar Asia's Lunar New Year Art Takes Flight Boarding Pass Design Competition, an impressive feat over 484 other entries. Janice's design of a family at reunion dinner best captured the essence of Lunar New Year, and will be featured on Jetstar Asia's boarding passes this festive season.

Short-Film-Award

5th Singapore Short Film Awards 

A short film by two graduates from SOTA's pioneer film cohort, Nathalie Khoo and Teo Qi Yu, has been nominated for the annual 5th Singapore Short Film Awards. Entitled "On Such and Such A Day, At Such and Such A Time", it is a heart-warming story about the relationship between Natalie and her grandma, Ellen.

The short film is nominated for three categories including Best Documentary, Best Editing (Teo Qi Yu/Natalie Khoo) and Best Cinematography (Teo Qi Yu).

Organised by the Substation, a total of 20 short films were nominated this year.

Lions International Peace Poster Contest 2013  

Four Year 1 Visual Arts students have emerged winners in the Lions International Peace Poster Contest 2013. This art contest for students between 11-13 years old encourages our younger generation to express their visions of peace through the use of a variety of mediums including crayon, pencil and paint. The works created are the unique expressions of our country’s young artists’ life experiences and culture. The theme of the Peace Poster Contest 2013/14 is “Our World, Our Future”.

The winners are as follows:

  • Janice Yap En Ling - Merit Prize
  • Jayne Chong Yi Fei - Merit Prize

American Protégé International Vocal Competition 2013  

Joy Tan, our Year 4 Theatre student represented Singapore in the prestigious American Protégé International Vocal Competition 2013, and went on to clinch the 2nd place in the Broadway category. She was subsequently invited to sing in the Carnegie Hall, New York City on 22 December 2013.

National Piano and Violin Competition 2013 

Two of our Year 2 Music students, Ronan Lim and Joey Lau made it to the finals of the National Piano and Violin Competition (NPVC) 2013 and went on to clinch the 2nd and 3rd prizes in the Violin Intermediate category.

The NPVC is a biennial event organised by the National Arts Council to identify and develop young music talents by providing opportunities for young musicians to perform before international judges.
